A Tribute to Sheikh Khalifa

His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, passed away on Friday, May 13 and was laid to rest on Friday evening at the Al Bateen Cemetery in Abu Dhabi. He was 73 years old and a prolific and widely respected leader locally and internationally. Sheikh Khalifa was hailed as a great friend by some as well as a sublime statesman by others. Our team at MEDIACUBED were saddened to hear the news and have chosen to dedicate this weeks newsletter as a tribute to the late Sheikh.

Sheikh Khalifa’s Years in Office

In 2004, when Sheikh Khalifa became President after the death of UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Emirates had already made progress towards becoming an advanced nation.

Under Sheikh Khalifa’s guidance, the country has continued to grow, attracting investment and people from across the world, expanding its education and healthcare sectors, and producing myriad developments that are recognised worldwide.

Abu Dhabi’s Hindu Temple Honours Sheikh Khalifa’s Legacy of Peace and Tolerance

Prayers have been held at Abu Dhabi’s first Hindu temple to celebrate Sheikh Khalifa’s legacy of “harmony and tolerance”. Priests and worshippers joined together to honour the late leader and deliver support for the new President, Sheikh Mohamed.

Swami Brahmavihari, head of international relations for Baps Swaminarayan Sanstha, the organisation responsible for building the shrine, said it was important to reflect on Sheikh Khalifa’s achievements while mourning his loss.

“His leadership inspired this nation to become a home of peace and prosperity and a beacon of harmony and tolerance,” he told worshippers.

Sheikh Khalifa’s Granddaughter Commits to Continuing Sustainability Legacy

The granddaughter of the late UAE President, Sheikh Khalifa, says she is committed to continuing the sustainability legacy started by her grandfather.

Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan is the founder and chief executive of the Alliances for Global Sustainability and will be speaking at an international event focused on sustainability that starts today in Rome.

She has spoken via a pre-recorded message that was filmed before the news of Sheikh Khalifa’s death was announced on Friday.

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa: Built Out of Opulence; Named for it’s Saviour

Soaring 200 storeys and 828 metres into the sky, the world’s tallest structure opened in Dubai in 2010, a monument to the excesses of the emirate’s bygone boom.

But while the $1.5-billion (U.S.) tower’s striking opulence recalled the unrestrained era of a massive property bubble, its surprise name was very much grounded in Dubai’s new reality.

Originally called Burj Dubai, it was renamed Burj Khalifa Monday in a tribute to Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, head of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi, which came to debt-laden Dubai’s financial rescue.
